Two thrilling contests between the national teams of Great Britain and France were a fitting centrepiece of the Womens International Lancashire Cup in Preston.
On Saturday afternoon, the teams opened the event with a back-and-forth contest, which saw France take a 2-0 lead in the 1st period before Rebecca Gmunder pulled a goal back towards the end of the period. A 3rd France goal was answered by an Emelie McLaren marker for GB, before a 3rd period of solid British pressure failed to yield the equalizing goal. French goalie Justine Dellanegra was instrumental in preserving the French lead and a 3-2 victory for the visiting team.
The second contest, on Sunday morning saw Great Britain take a 2-goal lead through Zemfira Zakojan and Ellen Dring, before being pegged back by 2 French goals. GB re-took the lead thanks to Rebecca Gmunder, before France equalized again, to make the score 3-3 going into the final period.
In the 3rd period, British pressure paid off with goals from Megan Geddes and Emelie McLaren to not only secure a 5-3 victory, but also to clinch the Lancashire Cup by an aggregate score of 7-6.
